Technical Whitepaper Depth

Engineering Superiority: Cross-Lapping vs. Parallel Hydroentanglement

A comprehensive technical analysis of mechanical anisotropy, dimensional tolerance, and process integration.

Isotropic Tensile Equilibrium

Traditional parallel spunlace demonstrates machine direction (MD) to cross direction (CD) ratios exceeding 3:1 or 4:1. Our continuous cross-lapping process realigns fibers into multi-directional matrices, yielding MD:CD ratios between 1:1 and 1.2:1. This eliminates directional deformation during high-speed converting, coating, and automated lamination.

Optimized Surface Planarity

Plain cross spunlace eliminates high-relief surface aperturing, generating an ultra-smooth, uniform surface topography. This planar consistency provides an ideal interface for high-end synthetic polyurethane (PU) / polyvinyl chloride (PVC) coagulation, high-definition direct printing, and sensitive wound-contact medical matrices without fiber release.

High-Pressure Hydroentanglement

Utilizing high-pressure micro-water jets operating up to 150-200 bar across sequential injector banks, individual staple fibers (viscose, polyester, PLA, PP, and aramid) undergo tight interlacing without the addition of chemical binders, polyvinyl alcohol, or synthetic glues, maintaining maximum softness, biological purity, and high lint-resistance.

Technical & Commercial FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions by OEM Engineers & Buyers

In-depth responses regarding manufacturing capabilities, tolerances, certifications, and customization.

What distinguishes Plain Cross Spunlace from Parallel-Lapped Spunlace?
Plain cross spunlace uses a mechanical cross-lapper to lay carded webs across each other at angled trajectories prior to hydroentanglement. This technique balances the fiber matrix, achieving nearly equal machine direction (MD) and cross direction (CD) tensile strength (ratios close to 1:1 or 1.2:1). Parallel-lapped webs run straight through, creating an anisotropic web with high MD strength but poor CD strength (ratios of 4:1 or higher) that easily stretches under load.
Which raw fiber compositions can be processed on your hydroentanglement lines?
YDL Nonwovens processes 100% polyester (PET), 100% viscose/rayon, and various PET/viscose ratio blends. In addition, our manufacturing setup processes functional and technical polymers including polypropylene (PP), bio-based polylactic acid (PLA), bamboo fibers, and specialty engineering materials such as aramid, basalt, glass fiber, and pre-oxidized polyacrylonitrile (PAN) filaments.
Can color, surface stiffness, and functional chemistry be applied in-house?
Yes. A primary operational advantage of our Changshu facility is complete downstream integration under one roof. We carry out dyeing, chemical sizing (stiffness modification), dispersion printing, and functional finishing (hydrophobic water-repellent, hydrophilic, flame-retardant, antibacterial, thermochromic, and antistatic finishes) internally, maintaining direct control over batch-to-batch quality.
What are the achievable basis weight (GSM) ranges and roll slit widths?
We manufacture plain cross spunlace across an operational range of 35 gsm up to 220+ gsm. Roll widths can be custom slit from narrow tapes (50 mm) up to 3200 mm wide master rolls, with adjustable core diameters (76 mm / 3 inch or custom) based on downstream converting requirements.
How does YDL ensure compliance for medical and cleanroom applications?
Our facilities follow strict ISO 9001 certified quality management protocols. The hydroentanglement process utilizes ultra-filtered water without chemical adhesives, minimizing residual extracts and bioburdens. We regularly supply materials tested against cytotoxicity, skin irritation, and lint generation criteria for converted surgical drapes, wound dressings, and cleanroom wipes.
What are standard Minimum Order Quantities (MOQs) and lead times?
Standard white conventional spunlace production requires an MOQ of 1,000 kg to 3,000 kg depending on target weight and fiber composition. Custom-dyed, printed, or specialized functional finishes generally require 3,000 kg to 5,000 kg. Standard delivery times are 15 to 25 business days from laboratory formulation approval to FOB port dispatch.
